Rainy Week For Mumbai: Mid-Week Heavy Rainfall Likely
May 19, 2025, 3:37 PM | Skymet Weather TeamMumbai has been experiencing unseasonal showers during this month. The month of May has a normal rainfall of just 11.3 mm, and even that, showers go missing on many of the occasions. However, the city witnessed early moderate thundershowers during the first week of the month.
The Santacruz observatory has already recorded 41 mm of rainfall this month. Colaba has registered more than double this rainfall, amounting to 84mm so far. Heavy rainfall is likely during this week over the city and suburbs.
A cyclonic circulation is likely to come up over the Konkan Coast and adjoining Arabian Sea in the next 24 hours. Also, there is a pre-existing circulation off South Coastal Andhra Pradesh and North Tamil Nadu over the Bay of Bengal. This feature will move inland in the next 36 hours and merge with the circulation over the Konkan region. Under their influence, a low-pressure area is likely to come over right on the Konkan region and adjoining Arabian Sea on 22nd May 2025.
Mumbai is likely to have light showers today. The wet spells will be of moderate strength and intermittent in nature tomorrow. Further, after the formation of a low-pressure area, the rains are likely to be heavier all along the Konkan Coast. Mumbai and its suburbs will witness heavy rainfall on 22nd and 23rd May 2025. The showers will continue even after the low pressure moves over the Northeast Arabian Sea, a little away from the Konkan and South Gujarat Coast.
The southwest monsoon may set in earlier than the normal date of 11th June for Mumbai. The anticipated spell will be part of pre-monsoon showers and may expedite the arrival of the monsoon subsequently. During this wet spell, the city may get a deluge of three-digit rainfall in 24 hours. Normally, pre-monsoon showers are not very common in the month of May, and heavy rainfall is rather rare. Last time, it was 31st May 2006, when very heavy rainfall of 180 mm in 24 hours was recorded at Santacruz. This rainfall, being on the last day of the month, was counted against 01st June.
The upcoming spell will be the first heavy rainfall event of this year. This might as well result in waterlogging and inundation in the low-lying areas. Since the heavy rainfall is likely around the mid-week on the working days of 22nd and 23rd May, it may cause some difficulty for the commuters and officegoers. Road and air traffic may be hit temporarily, and therefore, caution needs to be exercised.
