In a curious convergence of meteorological phenomena, the South Peninsula is currently under the influence of not one but two cyclonic circulations—one hovering over North Interior Karnataka and the other spinning over the North Coast of Tamil Nadu. These weather systems are set to unleash intense rain and thunderstorm activity across several southern Indian states over the next 24 to 48 hours.

Skymet believes that, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, parts of Telangana, and the North Coast of Andhra Pradesh are bracing for heavy to very heavy rainfall. These downpours are forecast to particularly affect key cities and districts:

• In Andhra Pradesh, urban hubs like Visakhapatnam, Godavari, Vijayanagaram, and Srikakulam may witness intense thunderstorms.

• In Karnataka, cities including Bengaluru, Mysuru, Tumkur, Mangaluru, and Mandya are expected to be lashed by moderate to heavy rains.

• In Tamil Nadu, a wide sweep of districts—Vellore, Tiruchirappalli, Salem, Dharmapuri, Namakkal, Thanjavur, Pudukkottai, Sivaganga, Madurai, and Dindigul—are likely to experience strong showers.

Skymet considers this intense spell a precursor to the Southwest Monsoon, with cooler temperatures likely to follow, providing relief from ongoing heat. The rainfall will help replenish water reservoirs across the region—an outcome both practical and timely.

There are chances of flash floods and water logging in many areas.
