Monsoon Knock Over Delhi Soon: Rainy Days Ahead
Jun 23, 2025, 12:40 PM | Skymet Weather TeamThe southwest monsoon has been skipping early dates of onset over the capital city. Conditions turned favourable for monsoon arrival on Sunday itself, but rains have been amiss for the entire NCR. Except for rains, other parameters are getting aligned for the arrival of the monsoon, a little earlier than its normal date. Low-level winds have an easterly component, the temperatures have dropped below normal, relative humidity is very high, and muggy conditions have prevailed over the weekend. The formal announcement of monsoon entry over the national capital may come on Tuesday, 24th June 2025, about three days before the scheduled arrival.
Invariably, the oscillation of the monsoon trough close to Delhi is the trigger for monsoon showers. There have been good rains over Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and Punjab, not very far from Delhi, and the monsoon has already notified an early arrival over northern parts of the country.
In all likelihood, the monsoon may cover the entire country before time, with a fair amount of chance in June itself.
The low-pressure area over central parts of Uttar Pradesh has weakened, but the cyclonic circulation continues to be marked at medium levels. Another circulation in the lower levels is marked over North Punjab and the adjoining Pakistan region. The east-west trough joining the two systems is south of Delhi. This is the feature that is likely to shift northward across the Delhi area, most likely tomorrow. Oscillation of this trough will ultimately bring the monsoon current to Delhi, at the latest by tomorrow evening.
There are chances of having light and patchy rainfall over some areas in Delhi/NCR today as well. The indications are more promising for scattered light to moderate rain and thundershowers tomorrow. Once the southwest monsoon makes entry into the national capital, the region will find more such showers during the rest of the week. The intensity and the spread could be greater between 26th and 29th June. The rainfall activity will spill over to the start of next week also. The day and night temperatures will stay in the mid-30s and mid-20s, respectively. Weather conditions are expected to turn better and comfortable from mid-week to mid-week next .
