Key Takeaways:

  • Assam likely to witness thunderstorms and rain during polling hours
  • Southern Kerala may see afternoon and evening rain activity
  • Puducherry to remain warm and humid with minimal rain threat
  • Weather activity peak expected during late afternoon to night hours

Polling is set to take place tomorrow in Assam, Puducherry, and Kerala. While active pre-monsoon conditions prevail over Northeast India, the South Peninsula will have a mild influence over most parts. Late afternoon, evening, and early night hours are the most favourable timings for weather activity during this time.

Assam: A cyclonic circulation is marked over the central parts of Assam and adjoining Bangladesh. Anticyclonic wind flow is pushing moist winds from the Bay of Bengal. The entire Assam Valley witnessed scattered rains in the past 24 hours. A similar weather pattern will persist on April 9 as well. Weather activity is expected during the later part of the day and night hours. Lower Assam and the southeastern parts of the state, squeezed between Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura, will be at a higher risk of inclement weather conditions. The preferred locations for weather activity will include Dhubri, Goalpara, Kokrajhar, Bongaigaon, Barpeta, Nalbari, Guwahati, Dispur, Cachar, Haflong, Silchar, and Karimganj. The remaining parts of the state will witness light weather activity for shorter durations. Lightning strikes and thunderstorm activity should be avoided in open areas, and minimal exposure should be ensured if absolutely necessary.

Kerala: A wind discontinuity in the lower levels, a seasonal feature, is likely to extend from Telangana to the southern tip of Kerala, passing across Rayalaseema, South Interior Karnataka, and the bordering areas between Tamil Nadu and Kerala. This feature has a diurnal east-west oscillation and is most active in the afternoon and early evening hours. Rain and thunderstorm activity are likely over the southern parts of the state. The places at risk will include Ernakulam, Kottayam, Alappuzha, Kollam, Punalur, and Thiruvananthapuram. The northern half of the state will remain relatively better, including locations like Kasaragod, Kannur, Thalassery, Kozhikode, and adjoining areas.

Puducherry: Puducherry is a Union Territory of India, surrounded by Tamil Nadu, with two of its other districts (Mahe and Yanam) located in Kerala and Andhra Pradesh, respectively. It is a relatively small region, and weather conditions are mostly akin to North Coastal Tamil Nadu and South Coastal Andhra Pradesh. Mahe, surrounded by Kannur and Kozhikode districts of Kerala, observes similar weather conditions. Weather conditions are likely to remain warm and humid along either side of the coastline. The threat of precipitation is minimal for this Union Territory.
