The well-marked low pressure has intensified into a depression over Southwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining Indian Ocean and Sri Lanka, around 500 km from Kanyakumari in Tamil Nadu. The system is likely to move in west-northwest direction across Sri Lanka.
As the sea surface temperatures are warm with abundant moisture, situation seems conducive for the further strengthening of the system into a deep depression by Wednesday evening or night. There are chances for its further intensification into a cyclonic storm during the next 24 hours.

Joint Typhoon Warning Centre (JTWC) has already issued a cyclone alert.
However, if formed, the cyclone intensity will remain for a very short duration. The moment system enters into Arabian Sea, it will travel in comparatively cool water due to which system will then start getting less marked.
During this time, moderate to heavy rains with few spells of very heavy showers are anticipated over the southern tip of Tamil Nadu and Kerala. These showers will be accompanied with gusty winds to the tune of 40-50 kmph. Places such as Pamban, Kanyakumari, Ramanathapuram, Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi and Punalur would witness these intense showers. Meanwhile, Chennai will settle with light to moderate showers.
