Chennai Rains 2017 Update: Moderate to heavy rains to continue

November 4, 2017 4:47 PM |

Chennai rains continue to wreak havoc over the city, increasing the death toll to 12. In fact the state capital has already recorded over 90% of its monthly rainfall in the first four days of the month itself.

Torrential rains have paralyzed most parts of the city wherein, most of the routes are water logged causing the traffic jams, school and college closure. As per media reports, around 2105 relief camps have been set up in Chennai and more than 10,000 people have taken refuge in these camps.

On Friday, Nungambakkam Observatory in Chennai recorded heavy rains to the tune of 66 mm of rain, while Minambakkam witnessed 62 mm. Other areas of Tamil Nadu that recorded good showers in last 24 hours were Parangipettai at 95 mm, Karaikal at 68 mm, and Atirampattinam at 40 mm.

The low-pressure area over Sri Lanka and adjoining southwest Bay of Bengal is still persisting and we expect that due to its effect, moderate to heavy rains will continue during the late evening and night hours until November 5.

Moderate lightning strikes with moderate to strong gusty winds are also possible along the Tamil Nadu coast including Chennai. However, the rain intensity is expected to subside significantly during the day time but isolated light rain cannot be ruled out.

After November 5, the Low Pressure area is expected to move in east direction away from the coast. Therefore, the rain intensity will start decreasing over Chennai and adjoining areas. But scattered light rain with few moderate will continue thereafter as well.

With this, people across the coastal areas will continue to face problems such as water logging, traffic jams and flash floods at several places.
