Rain in Assam

Assam has been seeing moderate to heavy rains since the last few days now. The rest of Northeast India is also observing scattered rains. In the last 24 hours, Gangtok received 56.4 mm of rains, Mangan 18.1 mm, Tadong 46.7 mm, Kailashahar 16.6 mm, Imphal 1.1 mm, Dibrugarh 1.7 mm, Golaghat 24.6 mm, Guwahati 15.9 mm, Mazbat 8.2 mm, North Lakhimpur 86.2 mm, Silchar 15.8 and Tezpur recorded 28.9 mm of rains.

The reason for these rains can be attributed to a Cyclonic Circulation that is marked over Assam. Also, humid southwesterly winds from Bay of Bengal are increasing moisture over Northeast India.

The intensity of the ongoing rains is expected to increase gradually under the influence of these systems.

Skymet forecasts heavy to very heavy rains over parts of Meghalaya, Nagaland and Mizoram in the next 24 hours. It is expected that these moderate to heavy showers might continue for at least the next one week.

As of now, almost all the states of Northeast India are running rain deficient with the cumulative rainfall deficiency of East and Northeast India for the season lying close to 39%. The two major Northeast states of Arunachal Pradesh and Assam are deficient by 41% and 30% respectively.

However, as a silver lining to the cloud, these upcoming rains might bring down the rain deficiency over these states to some extent.
