Bihar, the eastern state of India, is the rainiest so far this monsoon season. The state rainfall exceeded double the normal and still stands with a surplus of 100%. It has recorded a total of 421mm against a normal of 210mm between 01st June and 04th July.

Monsoon reached before time over Bihar and maintained active to vigorous conditions. Bihar had a double whammy of monsoon fury with the mountainous state Nepal increasing gushing water through the rivers flowing across the state and foothills of Bihar raining incessantly getting flooded since the middle of June with little respite in between. West Champaran, East Champaran, Sitamarhi, Madhubani, Madhepura, Supaul, Forbesganj, Darbhanga, Muzaffarpur, Araria,Bhagalpur, Punea, Kishanganj and Katihar are the worst hit. Floods have affected life and damaged property along with crops.

The situation is not likely to improve much as the rains will continue for the next one week with short breaks in between. A cyclonic circulation is persisting over and close to the region keeping the trough line close to the foothill, Yet another weather system of a similar kind is coming up after 48hr and will keep the monsoon vigorous over the state in general and foothills in particular. The flood-like situation can not be ruled out, both due to heavy rains over the state and the overflowing of rivers because of the downpour in the mountainous catchment areas.
