Breathless Delhi: Pollution levels to spike again, no relief for the next 48 hours

Breathless Delhi: Pollution levels to spike again, no relief for the next 48 hoursDelhi Pollution levels have been sky high for quite some time now. Since Diwali, Delhiites have been breathing toxic air. In fact, Delhi is not only the most polluted city in India but also on planet Earth.

However, breathless Delhi had heaved a sigh of relief on November 7 when the winds had started picking up pace. Wind speed further increased on November 8 and 9 resulting in improved conditions.

However, the hope of breathing clean air was short sighted and winds have once again started dying down since yesterday. Today, the wind direction has also changed from Northwesterly to Southeasterly.

As reiterated by Skymet weather, a Western Disturbance is expected to affect the hills of North India today evening onward. This system has already induced a cyclonic circulation over Central Pakistan. Due to these weather features; humidity will increase and winds will be light to very light.

In fact, pollution levels had gone up since yesterday itself. At present, several areas of Delhi and the NCR region are observing high PM 2.5 levels. While the PM 2.5 levels are at 428 in Pitampura, Delhi University is at 452, Pusa 403, Noida 421, Gurgaon 383, Mathura Road 442, and Airport (T3) 379.

Though crop burning in Punjab and Haryana has reduce significantly, some parts are continuing with the practice. Thus, the smoke from stubble burning, local pollution and change in weather pattern combined together will once again increase pollution levels over Delhi and the NCR region.

These pollutants will remain trapped near the Earth’s surface for another 48 hours. Thus, Delhiites will continue to breath polluted air for the next few days.
