Chandigarh, Amritsar, Jammu shiver as minimums drop significantlyFor the past few days, plains of North India including Jammu have been reeling under severe coldwave conditions. Minimums have been recording well below the normal levels over these areas.

While winter chill remained absent from most parts of North India until the first half of January, cold weather conditions have taken over during the last few days.

Due to the absence of any Western Disturbance over the hills of North India, cold northerly winds continue to blow over North India. Due to these conditions, minimum temperatures have remained on the lower side.

While Punjab and Jammu continued to witness cold mornings, minimums have taken a sharp dip on January 24. The minimum temperature has been recorded at 0.5°C in Jammu today, which is the lowest this month.

Not only this, but minimums in parts of Punjab have also witnessed a significant drop. While the residents of Amritsar shivered at 1.4°C, the minimum temperature in Chandigarh has also fallen below the two-degree mark.

Severe coldwave conditions will continue over these areas for another 24 to 48 hours. However, a fresh Western Disturbance is likely to affect the hills of North India on January 26. Thus, the temperatures over the plains of North India will once again witness a rise leading to the abatement of the coldwave conditions.
