Chennai, parts of Tamil Nadu to see some Monsoon rains

The state of Tamil Nadu does not see heavy Monsoon rains during the Southwest Monsoon season as it lies in the rain shadow area. In fact, there are a very few occasions when good Monsoon rainfall activity makes an appearance over the state of Tamil Nadu. Similarly, Chennai rains also remain on the lighter side. It is during the Northeast Monsoon season when the region sees heavy rains.

During Southwest Monsoon season, cities of Coimbatore, Salem, Madurai and Trichy see some good rains while the coastal parts see very little rainfall activity.

Currently, Southwest Monsoon is limited to the Northern Plains and has the tendency to shrink further with the trough moving towards the foothills of the Himalayas. It is during this time that situation becomes conducive for rainfall activity over Tamil Nadu.

The last 24 hours also saw some rains with Parangipettai recording 48 mm of rains, Puduchrry 9 mm, Coimbatore 2.4 mm, Coonoor 14 mm, Kodaikanal 4.3 mm, and Salem 2.2 mm.

During the next 24 hours, rains are likely over the state of Tamil Nadu of similar intensity. In fact, some rains are also likely over Chennai. Meanwhile, with expected low pressure area in Bay, rainfall will reduce over the state of Tamil Nadu.
