Chennai rains break decade old record of September

September 30, 2016 8:49 AM |

Chennai RainsChennai rains have displayed a fabulous performance during the month of September. So much so that the city has received heavy Monsoon showers on several occasions. During the last few days as well, Monsoon rains have been good over the capital city of Tamil Nadu.

These Monsoon showers over the city during September can be attributed to multiple weather systems that developed in the Bay of Bengal. These Monsoon systems resulted in a few heavy spells over Chennai resulting in increased rain figures at the end of the month.

Usually, Chennai does not receive a lot of rain during the month of September or any other month of the Southwest Monsoon season as it lies in the rain shadow area. However, good Monsoon showers are observed between the months of October and December which happens to be the Northeast Monsoon season.

This year, Chennai rains have remained on the higher side during the entire Southwest Monsoon season. In fact, Chennai has been able to record a whopping 298 mm of rainfall against its monthly rains of 137.3 in September, which is more than double the usual amount.

Not only this, Chennai has witnessed the highest monthly rains during the month of September in a decade. The last time such good rains were observed in the past ten years was in 2011 at 286.2 mm. The all-time rain records stand at 314.5 mm recorded in 1996.
