Chennai rains to revive, light showers tonight

Chennai Weather post

The rain show over Chennai has been on a break for almost last 15 days as the city has not recorded any rains ever since December began, except for the first one or two days. The reason for this dry spell that the city has been reeling under can be associated with the absence of any significant rain-giving weather system.

The fag end of November month was under the influence of Cyclone Ockhi which resulted in raining over the capital of Tamil Nadu. The last 24 hours were also of no difference as both the Minambakkam and Nungambakkam Observatories did not record any rains.

However, now Skymet Weather predicts possibilities of some rainy spells over Chennai very soon. As per Skymet Weather, a trough is extending from Northwest Bay of Bengal to Southwest Bay of Bengal near coastal Tamil Nadu. Moreover, a cyclonic circulation is also seen over South Andaman Sea. Alongside, a trough from this system is also extending up to coastal Tamil Nadu.

Thus, under the influence of all these weather systems, Chennai and a few other coastal stations of Tamil Nadu are expected to receive light with isolated very light rains during the late evening or night hours of December 19.

Furthermore, these rains are likely to continue to show up over coastal Tamil Nadu including over Chennai until December 22. The intensity of these showers is likely to increase around December 21 when few districts of interior Tamil Nadu may also get to witness light to moderate rains.

However, these rains will not be heavy so as to trigger alarming situation for floods and thence, people are advised not to panic. Thus, the weak phase of Northeast Monsoon will revitalize for the next few days.

Thereafter, a low-pressure area is also expected to develop in South Andaman Sea around December 25 though it is still a wait and a watch situation if this weather system will travel towards Tamil Nadu coast or will recurve towards North Bay of Bengal.
