Tamil Nadu as such receives less rainfall during theSouthwest Monsoonseason. The main rainy season for the state is the Northeast Monsoon, which begins in October. Coimbatore lying in the rain shadow area, just beside the Western Ghats receives very less rains in the Southwest Monsoon season.
Coimbatore, situated in the Kongu Nadu region of the state ofTamil Nadu, normally receives 74.3 mm of rainfall in the month of September. But, this time it exceeded its monthly normal and recorded 92 mm of rain so far.
During the first week of the month, this major textile and industrial hub of Tamil Nadu received some light Monsoon rains. It experienced a long dry spell from September 9 to 23. Thereafter, rainfall picked up in most parts of the state including Coimbatore.
The city received very good showers during last 48 hours.Coimbatorerecorded 32 mm of rainfall on Monday morning. The state continues to receive some rainfall. In a span of 24 hours from 8.30 am on Monday, Coimbatore received 38 mm of rain,Kodaikanal32 mm,Dharmapuri10 mm andCoonoor7.5 mm.

In last 10 years, the highest September rainfall (107 mm) was recorded by the city in 2014. With one more day left in September, the city could easily exceed this record.
