Mumbai Rain

Mumbai rains usually end up taking a backseat as the Southwest Monsoon comes to an end. Dry weather begins to persist over the maximum city. The three months, particularly December, January and February witness see the least amount of rains. In fact, the total number of rainy days are also just about one for an entire month.

The only time that the city witnesses some rains is when a disturbance in the form of a cyclone or a deep depression takes place in the Arabian Sea. These systems either form in the Arabian Sea which is quite rare or their formation takes place in the Bay of Bengal and thereafter they re-emerge and re-curve towards the Arabian Sea.

One such system in the form of a cyclone had formed in the Bay of Bengal. The cyclonic storm Ockhi, which was also the first cyclone of the season had developed in the Bay. Thereafter, the weather system moved towards the Lakshadweep Islands in between giving devastating rains over Southern Kerala as well as Tamil Nadu.

The system gave torrential rains over the Lakshadweep islands as well. Now, the system in the form of a very severe cyclonic storm is churning in the Arabian Sea and is coming in proximity to Mumbai. The system is expected to recurve towards Gujarat coast gradually weakening into a cyclone thereafter a deep depression.

Rainfall has already begun over the city of Mumbai in view of the cyclonic storm. The intensity of rains will be even more on December 5 and Mumbai may witness a few spells of moderate rains.

In the month of December, in the last decade, Mumbai rains have been almost absent. The highest amount of rains that Mumbai has received throughout the last ten years has been just about 1.5 mm in the year 2014.

This time, this rainy spell is expected to break records for the city as Mumbai will easily be able to witness rainfall amounts over 1.5 mm. The rainfall activity is expected to continue over Mumbai for two more days i.e. on December 5 as well as 6 as the system will slowly weaken thereby giving rains over the region. The possibility of good rains is likely on December 5.

During this time of the year, the temperatures are the highest in this belt and even reaches in the mid-30s. However, with these rains, temperatures will also witness a drop and pleasant weather will be observed over the city of dreams.
