Delhi Breaks Jinx Of Dry Spell, More Showers Likely

February 20, 2024 12:50 PM |

Capital city Delhi finally loosened the shackles of the prolonged anhydrous spell, nearly two weeks long, in the rainiest winter month. The city had received rains during the first week and gone totally dry thereafter. Due to the long break, the day temperature soared to 29.7°C on 18th Feb and the minimum also entered the double-digit mark, in the low teens. Delhi and suburbs witnessed light rain and thundershowers, last night. The base observatory at Safdarjung measured 3mm of rainfall. Most other stations also recorded similar amounts, with a maximum of about 5mm at Pitampura, Pragati Maidan and Rajghat. The day temperatures dipped marginally, but continue to stay above normal. More showers are likely over the next 2-3 days, albeit light and fleeting in nature.

Western disturbance over the mountains has dumped very heavy snowfall, over the last 2 days. The plains of Punjab and Haryana have also received scattered, light to moderate rainfall. Delhi, otherwise on the outer periphery of the weather system, observed light but fairly widespread showers, during late night and early morning. Induced cyclonic circulation and the trough, the main trigger for these showers,  continue to run in close proximity to Delhi. The situation remains conducive for some more rains till 22nd Feb.

The city had earlier received 30.8 mm of rainfall, a little above the monthly normal. The total for the month now becomes 33.8mm and another 5mm may be added during the impending spell. Most of the weather activity will happen during the night and early morning hours. The chances of precipitation are the lowest today and fairly good tomorrow and the day after. Cloudy sky with rounds of rain and thundershowers are expected from the 21st night, till the 22nd morning. Better weather conditions can be expected during the later part of the day on 22nd Feb.

The temperatures are likely to drop, both, day and night during the next 3 days. While the maximum may hover around 25-26°C, the minimum will swing between 11-12°C. After the clearance in the weather conditions, the minimum may briefly return to single digits. Winds from the snow-bound mountains and rain-impacted plains will carry some nip in the air. Overall, pleasant weather conditions are likely till the fag end of the month.
