Delhi: Rain-Thundershower Evening Hours, Least Weather Activity On Weekend
As expected, Delhi/NCR was lashed by rain and thundershowers during the early night hours yesterday. Peals of thunder with lightning flashes were followed by sharp showers across the region. Base station Safdarjung recorded 5mm of rainfall, while the airport observatory recorded the highest with 17mm. Rainfall distribution in Delhi continues to be largely uneven. Between 1st and 18th July, Safdarjung recorded 120mm of rainfall against the monthly normal of 195.8mm. Palam has collected 226.6mm of rainfall, exceeding the monthly normal of 188.7mm. More showers are likely tonight.
The circulation over Rajasthan and Punjab has now completely shifted over central parts of Pakistan. The depression over central parts of Uttar Pradesh moved northwest and is now located over northwest Madhya Pradesh, centered near Gwalior. It is likely to move west-northwest and cover contiguous parts of Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan. The cyclonic circulation of the system is extending up to higher levels of the atmosphere. The east-west trough joining these two circulations is running south of Delhi but not very far. It is favourably placed to trigger another round of rain and thundershowers, almost a repeat of last night's activity.
With the westward movement of the depression and the likely weakening of the system, the trough will tend to shift north of Delhi during the weekend. The oscillation of the trough is invariably associated with some weather activity, albeit light and scattered. A light and patchy spell of rain for a brief duration is likely on Saturday evening, with a little more activity of a similar kind on Sunday. The northward position of the trough, together with a western disturbance as an upper air system over the mountains, will remain favourable for ‘off and on’ monsoon showers till midweek next.
With a fair amount of sunshine in the forenoon/afternoon hours, the day temperature may exceed 35°C today, after a gap of more than one week. The mercury may touch 36°C over the weekend. It is likely to drop again below 35°C starting next week.
