Delhi Records First Forty Degree Of The Season : Light Rain Likely
Key Takeaways
- Delhi records first 40°C of the season, Safdarjung at 40.3°C
- Ridge hottest at 41.4°C; multiple stations cross 40°C
- Western disturbance bringing clouds and scattered rain over North India
- Delhi likely to stay below 40°C with cloudy skies and limited rain chances
Delhi recorded its first 40°C temperature of the season yesterday. As it mostly happens, the capital city heats up to 40°C within the first ten days of the month. By that standard, breaching 40°C was slightly delayed and rolled over to the second half of the month. The base observatory, Safdarjung, recorded a maximum temperature of 40.3°C, about 3.5°C above normal. Lodi Road, Ayanagar and Pitampura also crossed 40°C, while Ridge was the highest at 41.4°C. The airport observatory, Palam, stayed short of the mark at 39.4°C but remained above normal by 2°C.
A western disturbance is moving across the mountains of North India. An induced cyclonic circulation is marked over border areas covering Central Pakistan, North Rajasthan and South Punjab. An east-west trough runs from this circulation to Southwest Uttar Pradesh across Haryana and Delhi. Under their combined influence, scattered rainfall lashed Jammu & Kashmir, with light isolated activity over the plains. There is extensive cloud cover over the entire region, and rain/thundershowers are likely during the day over Punjab, Haryana and North Rajasthan.
Delhi is on the outer periphery of the system. Light weather activity cannot be ruled out over Delhi/NCR. It could be a ‘touch and go’ situation for the national capital. However, cloud cover is likely to persist today, tomorrow and even on Sunday. The layer of clouds will be at medium and higher levels, likely restricting direct solar heating. However, surface winds have become light and variable, favouring a gradual rise in temperature. Delhi temperature is likely to remain just below 40°C today. No sharp rise is expected over the weekend as well. The temperature is likely to hover around 39°C, with a margin of ±1°C. No rainfall is expected between April 18 and 22, 2026.
