Delhi to experience winter chill, temp to go down

Until January 7, the winter chill was not felt the way it used to be over the plains of North India including Delhi NCR. In the first week of January, maximum temperatures in the country’s capital were above normal by 4-5°C. And till now winter chill has not been felt for a prolonged period.

But on January 7 Delhi experienced first winter rain due to induced cyclonic circulation over Punjab and Haryana in the wake of western disturbance over hills of North India.

The western disturbance has now moved away and induced cyclonic circulation has moved away towards east South Uttar Pradesh and adjoining North Madhya Pradesh leading to reversal of winds.

Now warm and humid southeasterly winds will exchange hands with the cold and dry northerly-northwesterly winds which have dropped the minimum temperature by 3°C in Delhi. The next active western disturbance will be around January 16; therefore we expect dry and cold winds to continue over Delhi and NCR till then. And temperatures may further drop by 3-4°C.

Winter chill conditions will be felt over most areas of North India including Delhi-NCR due to moderate cold winds from north. Temperatures will again start rising by January 14 when another western disturbance will approach Western Himalayas.
