Delhi Turns Warm, Showers Likely By End Of Week

October 10, 2023 3:19 PM |

Delhi temperatures have risen to cross 36°C, thrice on 06th, 08th and 09th October.  Mercury shot up to stay about 3°C above the normal. The minimum temperatures have also risen to hover around mid-20s for the last three days.  Observatories at Pusa, Najafgarh and Pitampura recorded a maximum of 37.4°C, 37.4°C and 38.4°C respectively, about 4-5 degrees above the normal.  The minimum temperatures also followed the same track.

Earlier, after the withdrawal of the southwest monsoon, the weather conditions had turned pleasant. The minimum temperature had slid down to about 18°C on three occasions in the 1st week.  A slight nip in the air had set in during the night and early morning hours. The passage of western disturbance across the mountains brought change in the wind pattern, increasing the humidity levels.  This change, combined with rise in mercury resulted warm and sultry conditions for the last two days.

After the withdrawal of the monsoon, clear sky and sharp sun does bring in second summer for a few days, at least. It is very common to witness the change before settling down with uninterrupted pleasant conditions from 2nd half of October onwards.

The western disturbance has lashed northern mountains with good showers. Parts  of Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh too witnessed light to moderate rainfall, the first spell, post withdrawal of monsoon. Weather conditions will start clearing today itself. Low level humid easterly winds will change once again to relatively dry westerly flow. Night temperatures are expected to drop by 2-4 °C, dipping below 20°C, during the next 2-3 days.

However, another western disturbance is reaching soon, anytime around 14thOctober. This system will be stronger than the current one. The spread of weather activity will extend and cover parts of Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh. Delhi can expect showers between 15th and 18thOctober. Spread of activity and frequency of showers will be more on 16th and 17thOctober. This extended wet spell over north India will set the stage for upcoming winters....
