Depression Forming Over Bay Of Bengal, 2nd Wave Of Heavy Rains For Andhra Pradesh And Tamil Nadu

November 15, 2021 2:15 PM |

Close on the heels of last week depression battering Tamil Nadu, another weather system is churning up over the Andaman Sea, aiming for Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu.  Both the states, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh, were deluged last week , more so the coastal belt. Another bout of 3 digit rainfall in few pockets around mid week is quite likely.

A low pressure area has formed over North Andaman Sea and adjoining Southeast Bay of Bengal (BoB), supported by cyclonic circulation extending up to medium levels of the atmosphere. This weather system is floating over favorable environmental conditions for further intensification.

While moving northwestward, well marked low pressure is expected in the next 24 hours and further intensification to a depression looks quite likely in the subsequent 24hr.  Pre existing cyclonic circulation off Tamil Nadu coast will also get subsumed in the broad circulation of depression, boosting its intensity and spread.

Inclement weather conditions with heavy to very heavy rainfall are likely over North Tamil Nadu, South Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema between 17th and 19th November.  Intense weather activity is expected to peak on 18thNovember, spreading to interior parts of Tamil Nadu  and Rayalaseema.

State capital Chennai along with Thiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, Tambaram, Vellore and Ranipet are at risk of receiving very heavy rainfall during this period. Also, Ongole, Nellore, Kavali, Bapatla, Prakasam, Gudur, Tirupati and Chittoor face the threat of deluge, more on 18th and 19th November.  The spread of weather activity will shrink and intensity become moderate on 20thNovember.

State of Tamil Nadu and sub division of Rayalaseema are rain surplus with 54% and 50% of their seasonal rainfall so far.  Even Andhra Pradesh and Yanam  have received normal rains with marginal shortfall. The current spell will raise the bar as sky is likely to open up frequently between 17th and 19th  November.

Weather activity will be accompanied with lightening, thunderstorm and strong winds, possibly damaging weak structures and felling old trees. Disruption of communication and connectivity is quite likely because of flooding and inundation in certain areas. Rail, road and air traffic may also get impeded simultaneously. Utmost caution need to be observed to avert any eventuality.
