Kolkata has been witnessing rains from quite a few days now but the intensity of these rains have remained varied. Though the month of July started with moderate rains, the intensity soon reduced from moderate to light and also in traces.

However, despite this, the city did even book a three-digit rain on its name. Though heavy rains of 55 mm were recorded on July 19, the last 24 hours, failed to continue its trend and Kolkata managed to witness light rains of 0.7 mm only.

The other districts of West Bengal that witnessed rains in the last 24 hours from 08:30 am on Thursday include Shanti Niketan that recorded a whopping 83.8 mm of rains, Bankura 40.2 mm, Midnapore 36 mm, Krishnanagar 25.2 mm, and Bahrampur witnessed 17 mm of rains.

As per Skymet Weather, the axis of Monsoon trough is currently passing from south of Kolkata, i.e from Digha which is why rains did occur but with a reduced intensity. However, now as this trough will gradually shift northwards, the entire Indo-Gangetic Plains will start recording good rains.

Subsequently, Gangetic West Bengal including Kolkata will also start receiving few moderate showers that are likely to continue for at least the next 2-3 days. However, one or two heavy spells cannot be ruled out as well. With the prediction of these rains, Kolkata stands a strong chance to surpass its monthly average rainfall that stands at 396 mm as the capital of West Bengal has already recorded 370 mm of rains.

The present weather condition in Kolkata is warm and humid and these rains will most likely bring slight relief from the ongoing humid weather for the next 2-3 days. As the city is in the vicinity of Bay of Bengal, therefore, not much relief from the sultry weather can be anticipated.
