In India, a heatwave is declared when the maximum temperature in the plains reaches at least 40°C, or when it rises 4.5°C above the normal for the region. If temperatures reach 45°C, it is classified as a heatwave. When the temperature reaches 47 degrees is considered a severe heat wave. Currently, Vidarbha in Maharashtra is reeling under such extreme conditions, with several districts recording scorching highs.

Record-Breaking Heat in Vidarbha

Over the last 24 hours, Chandrapur recorded a blistering 45.6°C, followed by Brahmapuri (45°C), Amravati (44.6°C), Akola (44.1°C), Nagpur (43.6°C), and Wardha and Yavatmal (both at 43.4°C). The region is experiencing dry, hot winds from the north, intensifying the heat. The heatwave is expected to persist until April 25, after which slight relief may come.

Health Risks: Sunstroke and Heatstroke

Prolonged exposure to extreme heat can lead to sunstroke (heat exhaustion) and heatstroke, a life-threatening condition. Symptoms include:

• Dizziness, nausea, headache

• Rapid pulse, high body temperature (above 40°C)

• Confusion or unconsciousness (in severe cases)

Do’s and Don’ts During a Heatwave

Do's:

• Drink plenty of water (avoid alcohol/caffeine).

• Wear light, loose cotton clothing.

• Stay indoors between 11 AM–4 PM.

• Use hats, sunglasses, and sunscreen.

• Seek cool, shaded areas and use fans/coolers.

Don’t:

• Engage in strenuous outdoor activities.

• Leave children or pets in parked vehicles.

• Consume heavy, oily meals.

Authorities have advised residents to stay vigilant and check on vulnerable groups like the elderly and infants. With no immediate relief in sight, taking precautions is crucial to avoid heat-related illnesses.
