Heavy Chennai rains make a comeback

September 29, 2016 8:07 AM |

Rain in ChennaiMonsoon rains have finally made reappearance over Chennai, with heavy showers drenching the entire city. In span of 24 hours from 8:30 am on Wednesday, Nungambakkam Observatory recorded 82 mm of rain, while Minambakkam Observatory received 77 mm.

According to Skymet Weather, couple of weather systems prevail in close proximity of the city have kept the Monsoon active over the region.

A trough is running from East Uttar Pradesh up to North Tamil Nadu across Telangana and Rayalaseema. Besides this, a cyclonic circulation has also been prevailing over east-central Bay of Bengal that has further enhanced the rains over the city.

Further, we expect light to moderate rains with isolated heavy showers to continue over the state capital for the next 24 hours. Thereafter, the intensity of rains will reduce significantly.

The cyclonic circulation has already become less marked, while the trough will also gradually become insignificant.

Chennai has been recording good on and off Monsoon showers ever since the beginning of the Monsoon. And with some more rains in sight, we expect that like the beginning, the month will also end on a rainy note.

The city had surpassed its monthly average rainfall during the first half of the month, which is not very common. So far, the city has recorded 298 mm of rain against the normal average rainfall of 137.3 mm.
