Heavy downpour over Gujarat, many districts flooded

July 23, 2023 3:30 PM |

Many districts of Gujarat were battered by heavy rain. Flash floods are being witnessed in Junagadh, Navsari, Surat and many other cities of South Gujarat and Saurashtra. Many cars and Cattle have washed away in flood water in Junagadh.

A cyclonic circulation is over the Northeast Arabian Sea, and a low-pressure area was over south Chhattisgarh and adjoining areas. The shear zone is running along latitude 20° north and a tough is extending from Naliya to Odisha across Gujarat. These weather parameters are responsible for heavy rain over Gujarat.

We expect moderate to heavy showers to continue over Gujarat for another 24 hours. Thereafter intensity of rain may reduce but light to moderate showers with one or two heavy spells may continue. Relief will be seen after July 25th. This is the second spell of heavy downpours over Gujarat during this monsoon which has triggered widespread flooding.

The axis of a monsoon trough will move over Rajasthan leading to a decrease in rain activities over Gujarat from July 26th. Light rain will continue until the end of July, but heavy rain is ruled out between July 26 and 31. A significant decrease in rain intensity will certainly help the rescue team to carry out their rescue operations smoothly.
