Heavy Rains Over Kerala To Continue For Next Three Days

May 20, 2024 1:15 PM |

Heavy rains lashed Kerala for the second consecutive day, yesterday. Capital city, Thiruvananthapuram received more than 200 mm of rainfall in the last 48 hours.  Kozhikode recorded 116mm of rainfall in the past 24 hours. Kochi, Punalur and Alappuzha also received moderate to heavy showers over the last two days. Weather activity will continue for the next three days, albeit getting staggered over different parts.

There is a cyclonic circulation over Coastal Tamil Nadu and the Southwest Bay of Bengal up to mid-tropospheric levels. Another small-scale circulation is marked over North Kerala and South Coastal Karnataka in the lower levels. An east-west trough joining the two circulations is running across North Kerala to North Tamil Nadu and Southwest Bay of Bengal, across the interiors of Tamil Nadu. The circulation over the Bay of Bengal is likely to become more marked and shift northeast over the deep sea, off Tamil Nadu. The connecting trough is likely to shift southward and become more active over southern parts of Kerala.

Heavy to very heavy rains are likely over Kerala over the next three days. The intensity of rains will be more over southern parts covering Alapuzha, Kollam, Varkala, Punalur and Thiruvananthapuram. Northern parts will also have moderate showers and heavy at isolated places. The system in the Bay of Bengal will intensify and move further northeast, parallel to the coastline. Rainfall activity will become light over the interiors of the state.  However, the coastline will continue to have fairly widespread heavy rainfall. Kasaragod, Kudulu, Kannur, Kozhikode, Guruvayur, Kochi, Mahe, Alappuzha, Kollam and Thiruvananthapuram will continue to have moderate to heavy rainfall between 23rd and 26th May. By then, monsoon onset will draw closer and the activity may start again after a short break.
