Heavy snowfall over in Shimla, light rain likely around weekend

Snowfall in ShimlaWinter holidays turned out to be fun for some in Shimla as the popular tourist destination became the perfect snow-covered getaway during last few days. After witnessing a White Christmas after 24 years, Shimla again observed heavy snowfall this past weekend.

It experienced 53 cm of snowfall along with minimum temperature of -0.4°C on Sunday.

Shimla was witnessing above normal temperatures during second half of December when the city was sustaining the tag of being hotter than several areas of Northern plains. Nights in Delhi were turning out to be colder than Shimla’s and Pune persistently nudged weather in Shimla as mercury continued to plunge remarkably in Pune.

However, things started to shape well for Shimla once it received snowfall on Christmas and began to magnetize visitors towards the popular hill station for winter holidays and the New Year celebration.

Besides Shimla, rain lashed several areas in Solan, Dharamsala, Mandi and Una in past 24 hours, pulling down temperatures significantly. Heavy snowfall also blocked around 500 roads in Himachal Pradesh.

Weather Forecast for Shimla

Snowfall activity is expected to subside by today evening and popular highways and transportation is expected to be restored completely by tomorrow morning.

In coming days, sunny afternoons are likely to make an appearance giving significant relief from the snowy and gloomy days to tourists and residents. However, icy cold winds will keep the minimum temperatures down, leaving mornings and nights cold.

A fresh Western Disturbance is likely around 13th January that will the sky cloudy in Shimla and may bring light rain that day. There are also chances of scattered snowfall on 16-17th January as another Western Disturbance approaches the Western Himalayas next week.
