January brings out days that are cold and grey.

January is the door to the year. It is also a door to the peak winter season.

While winter sets in December; it peaks in January. Wondering, how we say that?

Well, it’s all a game of numbers.

Numbers, that gradually take a dip and exhibits a pattern that establishes the setting in of peak winter season. In December, the minimum temperatures experience a drop to single digit from double digits. After a gradual dip from 10°C to 9°C and finally to 8°C, the minimums are sustained at a figure of 7 degree till the third week of January.

Even though the key characteristic of winter, fog, begins appearing in December, it remains inconspicuous. Light winter rain or season’ first snowfall/sleet in parts of Jammu and Kashmir and other hilly states such as Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand also happen in December that results in cold days and nights in parts of Haryana, Punjab, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh.

So Isn’t December colder than January?

The answer, folks, is a no. The reason is the vigor with which fog and rain reappear in January. The extremes of cold weather, such as dense or very thick fog, snowfall in full throttle, moderate to heavy rain and mild or no sunshine at times begin to pinch people in January as minimum temperature often goes below 7°C.

January is also a time when average low drops below freezing point in plains of North India and hill stations on several occasions.

In short, January has more cold days and longer cold days. It means that by end of January, you’ll have more minutes of daylight than you did during the beginning of the month.

On the flip side, January is also the month when you’re probably using more electricity to keep your home warm than you did in December.
