January 10, 2022 4:00 PM |

State of Jammu and Kashmir has witnessed heavy snow in the hills and torrent rains in the foothills and lower areas.  Jammu division has been battered and all time high rainfall records have overtaken the previous marks. Jammu, Udhampur, Katra, Kupwara, Poonch and few others have received very heavy rainfall last week.

A pair of active western disturbance resulted inclement weather conditions for 5 days in a row causing roadblocks and landslides across many parts of the Jammu division. The spread and intensity of weather activity matched a western depression, otherwise not commonly seen during winters. Udhampur recorded an unprecedented all time high of 307mm deluge in 24hr. Jammu witnessed a downpour of 83mm in 24hr, beating an earlier record of 81.4mm on 13thJan 2000. With incessant rains, the 1st ten days of month have observed rainfall of 179.4mm. This itself, surpasses the earlier monthly milestone of 164.7mm in Jan2017.

Light rainfall is expected to continue for the next 24hr and weather conditions will improve significantly, tomorrow onwards. This break will last, at least for one week, and a mix of sunshine and few clouds are likely during this period. The minimum temperatures are likely to dip during the week. These are expected to remain in single digit hovering between 5-7°C, a shade below the normal at this time of the month.
