Kal-Baisakhi Thunderstorms Likely Over West Bengal, Jharkhand, Bihar and Odisha

The storms, many a time local in nature, carry damaging potential. Mostly, these storms originate over the Chhotanagpur area and travel across Jharkhand and West Bengal. The months of April and May are susceptible to hazardous weather activity in association with such thunderstorms. Thunderstorm cells develop in the afternoon hours, and weather activity starts in the evening and continues till early night.
A cyclonic circulation is likely to come up over Bihar on 26th April. An inclined trough will form and extend from this system across Jharkhand, Odisha, Chhattisgarh and further southward. The circulation will be fueled by warm and moist winds from the Bay of Bengal.
Most parts of Bihar, Jharkhand, South Bengal and Interior Odisha are witnessing seasonal heat with temperatures in excess of 40°C. The accumulated heat over the next two days will act as a trigger for the thunderstorm activity.
The scattered thunderstorm activity will commence on 27th Apr and cover parts of Gangetic West Bengal, Northeast, Jharkhand and South Bihar. The activity will continue on 28th April and extend further to North Odisha on 29th April.
The intense weather will remain confined to parts of Odisha and Central West Bengal on 30th April. Thereafter, the intensity of weather activity will down, yet the spread will continue over the eastern states.
Most vulnerable places in West Bengal will include Midnapore, Panagarh, Jhargram, Kalaikunda, Contai, Diamond Harbour, Digha, Bankura, Malda, Birbhum, Nadia, Baharampur and Murshidabad.
Northeastern parts of Jharkhand and Southern parts of Bihar will include Pakur, Dumka, Deogarh, Dhanbad, Jamtara, Sahibganj, Nawada, Jamui, Banka, Gaya, Patna, Bhagalpur and Aurangabad.
On 29th and 30th April, parts of Odisha at risk will include Baripada, Balasore, Puri, Paradip, Bhubaneshwar, Cuttack, Bhadrak and Jajpur.
The weather activity is likely to spill over to North Coastal Andhra Pradesh on 30th April. Light to moderate spell of rain and thundershowers over the region will continue during the first week of May 2025.
