Majestic 'Beating The Retreat' Likely In National Capital, Bad Weather Hit Last Year

January 29, 2024 12:38 PM |

Beating the retreat marks centuries-old military tradition, when the troops ceased fighting, sheathed their arms, withdrew from the battlefield and returned to the camps at sunset at the sound of the Retreat. The ceremony is nostalgia for the times gone by. Beating the Retreat is a colourful and musical event with martial music and patriotic songs. The event showcases the military band’s skills and pays tribute to the nation’s defence forces. The ceremony at the Vijay Chowk in New Delhi on January 29 every year marks the culmination of the four-day-long Republic Day celebrations. The ceremony is presided over by the President of India.

Last year, the glittering ceremony had taken a beating with moderate showers throughout the presentation. Still, the military bands excelled displaying their skills and excitement. No such inclement weather conditions are expected, this time. Maximum temperature is likely to rise beyond 20°C, unlike yesterday when it got arrested at 18°C. A fair amount of sunshine during the day will mitigate the bitter chill which normally descends during the evening hours.

The ceremony begins late in the afternoon and carries on till past sunset. The lighting at the Rashtrapati Bhavan and other buildings presents a spectacular view, a real delight to watch after the dusk descends at around 6.30 p.m today evening.

Mostly clear sky is expected during the ceremony. Cold winds down the slopes of the northern plains will reach right up to the capital city. No threat of any disruption on account of weather is expected. Evening fog and mist will largely spare the picturesque show and good visibility is likely. However, since the ceremony is held in the open without much shelter, guests and spectators will have to brace the cold.
