Mercury Plunges In Delhi, Sharp Rise Likely, Dry Days Ahead

March 4, 2024 12:19 PM |

The national capital witnessed rain and showers for three consecutive days, 01st, 02nd & 03rd Mar. Showers were mostly light, although, fairly widespread across NCR. Base observatory Safdarjung recorded a total of 4.2 mm of rainfall. Some of the observatories measured decent showers, over the weekend, crossing monthly normal of 17.4 mm for the month of March. The rainy spell has ended now and the showers have departed, at least for this week now.

A very active weather system lashed most parts of North India, both, the mountains and the plains. While the activity over the hills continues, of course, with mild intensity, the plains have recovered largely, in entirety. Over the plains, in the wake of the system, cold air is sweeping most parts. A sheet of clouds over the mountains has arrested the extreme chilly winds to penetrate right into the plains, but still, the temperatures have plunged, including over the capital city, Delhi. Earlier, the minimum temperature remained in double-digits for the last 5 days, with a minimum temperature as high as 15°C on 02ndMar, these have dipped now, below the normal and into single digits at many locations of Delhi/NCR.

The meteorological office at Lodhi Road recorded a low of 9°C and Jafarpur and Narela measured 8.3°C, each.  Ridge area at 8.6°C was the second lowest in the region. All these temperatures were 5°C below the normal. With a peep of sunshine, amidst the rain and clouds, the day temperatures managed to stay close to the normal of about 25-26°C. Change in the mercury levels is quite likely during the week.

Another western disturbance is likely to arrive in the late hours of the day, tomorrow. However, its influence will remain limited to the hills. Plains will have some windy conditions for the next 3-4 days. Some clouds also will drift in tomorrow and the day after, restricting the sunshine, a bit. Otherwise, there will be a tendency for the temperature, both day and night, to rise by 3-4°C, during this period. No rains are likely during this week but the next week may bring a twist in the weather conditions, yet again.
