Mercury Takes Plunge Over Delhi, Showers Likely Tomorrow

April 2, 2024 12:22 PM |

Mercury levels dropped significantly over and around Delhi during past 24 hours. Day maximum moderated to a pleasing 31.6°C, a drop of nearly 4°C from its previous day read of 35.2°C. Minimum temperature was 15.8°C today morning, sinking nearly 3°C from its earlier record of yesterday. Partly due to thin cloud cover and majorly because of strong surface winds, the temperatures plunged appreciably. Similar observations were made at other observatories in and around the capital city. The lowest of all was Mungeshpur with maximum of 30.5°C and minimum of 14.5°C.

Month of April is known for rising temperatures, at times leading to heat wave conditions over Delhi and suburbs. However, it invariably happens during second half of the month. As such, as per pentad normal, Delhi starts with temperature of 35°C and reaches about 38°C in the closing days of the month. Mean monthly temperature of April at Safdarjung observatory is 36.5°C. However, in the last 15 years, starting 2009, Delhi has crossed 40°C mark every year except in 2012 when the highest temperature got arrested at 38.7°C.  The highest temperature during this period was 43.7°C, recorded on 18thApril 2010. Very close to this mark, mercury level of 43.5°C was touched on 29th& 30th April 2022. The highest record for Delhi in April stands at 45.6°C, registered on 29 April 1941.

Delhi is likely to have the maximum temperature hovering around 35°C and minimum between 18-20°C for this week. A weak western disturbance is approaching Western Himalayas, late in the evening today. This will have feeble cyclonic  circulation over northwest Rajasthan and border areas. An east -west trough is extending from the circulation, running in the close proximity of Delhi.  Cloudy sky is likely over Delhi with intermittent sheet of high medium clouds. There are chances of light rain/ showers, tomorrow night over Delhi / NCR.  Activity will be weak and scattered and also for short duration. Flash of lightening and a peal of thunder and a gust of wind is quite likely. Weather conditions will clear up quickly, the next morning, with pleasing nip in the air.
