Monsoon Onset On Time Over Kerala, Simultaneous Advance Over Entire Northeast India

May 30, 2024 4:40 PM |

Southwest monsoon has arrived over mainland Kerala, today, a little ahead of schedule.  Skymet had predicted its likely arrival on the scheduled date of 01st June, with an error margin of +/- 3 days.  So, the monsoon has made a timely arrival over Kerala. Another unique feature was its simultaneous arrival over entire northeast India. The Northern limit of monsoon passes through Amini Devi, Kannur, Coimbatore, Kanyakumari, Agartala and Dhubri. Last time, the simultaneous arrival was seen in 2017 but very little portion of Manipur and Mizoram was covered in the first go.

Monsoon had arrived earlier on 19th May over South Andaman Sea, a little ahead of schedule. It normally covers the northeastern states by 05th June, about 5 days later than its arrival over Kerala. Its further advancement may be slow and weak as well. As per normal dates, the monsoon arrives over Goa by 05th June and covers Konkan, South Madhya Maharashtra and a small portion of Marathwada by 10th May.

Northeast India will rain good for the next week. However, monsoon rains may not be forceful for the South Peninsula, covering the state of Tamil Nadu, South Coastal Andhra Pradesh, South Interior Karnataka and Rayalaseema region. The main triggers for advancement of monsoon currents are either the offshore trough over the Arabian Sea, off Kerala-Coastal Karnataka or some vortex moving along the coast of Kerala and Karnataka. Also, any circulation or presence of low-pressure area likely over the Bay of Bengal takes the monsoon current further over the interiors of Peninsular India. Otherwise, advancement if any, will be weak and rainfall will be scattered.
