Around the month of May, the first Indian region that starts to receive Monsoon rains is Andaman & Nicobar Islands. This is the region where commencement of Monsoon happens. Then by June 1, the Monsoon rains start to affect the mainland of country by embarking over Kerala.
Even though the islands were the first to receive Monsoon rains, during the entire Monsoon season the Andaman & Nicobar Islands is rain deficient with 21%. The reason for being so rain deficient is the absence of any significant weather system Southeast Bay of Bengal.
But at present a cyclonic circulation is seen over Southeast Bay of Bengal at upper levels, which has induced good rains over the area. And in the last 24 hours heavy to extremely rainfall has occurred over the region; Port Blair has received 197 mm of rain, Mayabander 64 mm, Long Island 20 mm, Hutbay 39 mm.
This heavy rainfall is likely to continue for another 24 hours. Thereafter as the weather system moves away into the north direction, the rainfall will also decrease after 24 hours.
