More heavy rains to worsen flood situation in Banaskantha, Deesa, Idar, Ahmedabad

Several parts of Gujarat have been witnessing heavy to extremely heavy rains in the past many days, leading to massive floods. So far, around 72 people have been reported dead and thousands have been evacuated. NDRF (National Disaster Response Force) and Air Force have been pressed into rescue operations but incessant rains have been hampering the relief operations.

These torrential Monsoon rains could be attributed to the low pressure area that is persisting over South Rajasthan. This weather system has already given heavy to extremely heavy rainfall over the southern districts of Rajasthan as well as northern parts of Gujarat.

Deesa district in Gujarat has recorded a whopping 515 mm of rainfall in just three days. In the same way, Idar, Banaskantha, Ahmedabad and Patan have also been observing very heavy showers.

In a span of 24 hours from 08:30 am on Monday, Deesa recorded 269 mm of rainfall, followed by Idar 151 mm, Ahmedabad 40 mm, Baroda 7 mm, Surat 7 mm and Rajkot 5 mm.

These extremely heavy rains have aggravated the flood situation over Gujarat as the water from Rajasthan is also flowing towards the region. Particularly, Banaskantha and Patan districts are worst affected due to the floods.

Water logging has brought normal life to halt. Local authorities have asked people to stay indoors and avoid venturing out.

We do not expect any relief during the next 48 hours as well. As this low pressure area is anticipated to persist over South Rajasthan for at least next 24 hours. As a result, heavy to very rains will continue until tomorrow. Thereafter, rains will start reducing but flood situation will remain grim.

Moderate rain will continue over many parts of Junagadh, Ahmedabad, Amreli, Anand, Aravali, Banas kantha, Bharuch, Bhavnagar, Botad, Devbhumi Dwarka, Gandhinagar, Gir Somnath, Jamnagar, Kachchh, Kheda, Mahesana, Mahisagar, Marvi, Navsari, Panch mahals, Patan, Porbandar, Rajkot, Sabar kantha, Surat, Surendranagar and Vadodara during the next 8 to 12 hours.

As per Skymet Weather, the intensity of these rains may reduce by July 27 but few moderate showers with one or two heavy spells will continue over the northern and central districts of Gujarat.

As on July 24, Gujarat region is rain surplus by 34% and Saurashtra and Kutch region by 73%.
