Mumbai Races Against Time To Catch Up With Normal Rainfall

June 29, 2023 1:22 PM |

Since the monsoon onset on 25th June, Mumbai has been raining intermittent to continuous and moderate to heavy, for the last 5 days. Heaviest of rainfall (176mm in 24 hr)  was recorded on 25th June. Another 3 digit rainfall of 122mm was recorded today morning at Santacruz observatory. Colocated observatory at Colaba measured 148mm rainfall in the past 24 hours.

Rain intensity had reduced in the forenoon hours as compared to yesterday, but is likely to pick up during the day and tonight. Heavy to very heavy showers are likely in the next 24hr.

Mumbai was a late starter this monsoon, with arrival of seasonal rains only on 25thJune. Most delayed arrival for mumbai remains on 27th June in 2009, an El Nino year. Coincidentally, 2023 also is an El Nino year, having repeat performance. With two bouts of 3 digit rainfall over the last 5 days, the financial capital has accumulated 502.1mm of rainfall in June so far. The rainy monsoon city races against time to catch up with the monthly normal of 526.1mm.

The capital city will win the race against all odds, as any rainfall from 8.30am onwards tomorrow will be counted against July 2023. Notwithstanding, another downpour during the evening and night hours will take the city much ahead of the normal target of 526.1mm.

Low pressure area is marked over Madhya Pradesh and off shore trough extends all along the West Coast. Trough will remain active at least for the next 24 hours, more so far Konkan, bringing moderate to intense weather activity. Subsequently, with the drift of low pressure area and weakening as well, fury of monsoon rains will reduce, right on the first dawn of July. Rains will not cease completely, and showers with relatively longer breaks are expected between 01st -04th July.
