After evading the region for long, heavy rains and thundershowers have finally made an appearance over Tamil Nadu. However, majority of rainfall was confined to southern parts of the coastal state.
Few places such as Karaikal and Nagapattinam have recorded extremely heavy rainfall during the last 24 hours.
Onset of Northeast Monsoon has made the weather conditions favourable for the rain activity over the region. A well-marked low pressure area has been brewing in southeast Bay of Bengal and a trough is extending from this system up to Kerala.
According to Skymet Weather, intensity of rain is always more over the areas located in the southwest direction of the weather system. Thus, moderate to heavy rains occurred over South Tamil Nadu, while North Tamil Nadu recorded light to moderate showers only.
Further during the next 24 hours, we expect rains to reduce as the system will move away in northwestwards and trough will become insignificant. However, light to moderate rains with one or two heavy spells over South Tamil Nadu cannot be ruled out.
With the ongoing rainy spell, Northeast Monsoon seasonal rainfall deficiency for the state has reduced significantly. The deficiency, which was over 90% has now come down below 65% and is likely to drop further.
During this three-month long season, the coastal state records more than 50% of annual rainfall with November being the rainiest month.
