Parched Mumbai to witness rainy spell ahead

May 22, 2016 3:55 PM |

Parched Mumbai to witness rainy spell aheadMumbai weather has remained dry for over two months now. In fact, the last time the city received good showers was on March 5. Since then, Mumbai has remained mostly dry.  Presently, temperatures are recording slightly above normal the levels.

During the next 48 hours, not much change in temperatures is expected. However, by May 24, Mumbai may witness thunderstorm/thundershower activity. This weather activity will be the first pre Monsoon spell over the commercial capital of India this year. Few good spells are expected over the capital city of Maharashtra.

These rains will be attributed to an upper air cc which is expected to form off North Maharashtra coast at around 10,000 feet and a feeble trough which is at the lower levels. Due to these weather systems, southwesterly wind flow from Arabian Sea will increase the moisture over North Coast of Maharashtra including Mumbai giving rise to cloud formation.

Thus, some thundery clouds will develop and Pre-Monsoon activity is expected to commence over Mumbai after a long wait. This rainy spell will last for about two to three days and the city will receive rain until May 28. The intensity of the Pre-Monsoon showers will decide whether Mumbai will be able to surpass its monthly average of 12 mm or not.

These Pre-Monsoon showers will give a slight taste of the upcoming Monsoon which is likely to make onset in about three weeks’ time.
