Pre-Monsoon Showers and Thunderstorms Expected for Over Half of India

April 13, 2024 1:14 PM |

Get ready for a break from the heat! Pre-monsoon activity is picking up across a vast swathe of India, bringing much-needed respite from the scorching temperatures.

Over the past two days, intense rain with strong winds and even hailstorms lashed parts of Madhya Pradesh and Vidarbha. This active weather pattern is set to continue due to a combination of weather systems: a cyclonic circulation over the Saurashtra and Kutch, a western disturbance approaching the Western Himalayas, and another cyclonic circulation near Pakistan impacting parts of Rajasthan.

The result? Expect widespread rain and thunderstorms over Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, and Rajasthan. The Western Himalayan region can anticipate light to moderate rain and snowfall, along with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds between April 13th and 15th.

Meanwhile, northwest India, including Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, and Delhi, is bracing for scattered rain and thunderstorms with lightning, dust storms, and the possibility of isolated hailstorms from April 13th to 15th.

While the rest of the country might not experience widespread downpours, isolated rain and thunderstorms are on the forecast for Gangetic West Bengal, Jharkhand, Odisha, Bihar, and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands over the next 48 hours. Even interior Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and parts of Telangana can anticipate light to moderate rain.

This pre-monsoon activity is a welcome change, bringing down temperatures and offering relief from the ongoing heatwave. However, strong winds, rain, and hailstorms could potentially damage standing crops in the northwest and central regions. It's advisable for farmers to take necessary precautions to protect their agricultural produce.
