Pondicherry receives heavy Monsoon rains after longSouthwest Monsoon had been giving heavy to very heavy rains over several parts of the country. Many areas were receiving three digit rains. However, during all this time, parts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry witnessed subdued rains only.

Puducherry lies in the rain shadow area and thus receives rains of higher intensity during the Northeast Monsoon period.  Thus, the region has remained mainly dry in the month of August. However, rain gods have bestowed some kindness over Puducherry and some rains have been recorded.

In fact, Puducherry recorded 11 mm of rain the day before. Rainfall intensity increased to quite an extent during the last 24 hours and heavy rains have been witnessed. During the last 24 hours from 8:30 am on Saturday, Puducherry recorded a whopping 66.2 mm of rainfall.

These heavy Monsoon rains can be attributed to the feeble off shore trough which developed over the interior parts of Tamil Nadu about two days ago. The trough is currently running from Tamil Nadu to Interior Karnataka.

During the next 24 hours, Puducherry may receive light rains. However, the intensity will reduce as compared to the last 24 hours. So far, Puducherry has received 77.9 mm of rain against its monthly rains of 132.8 mm.
