The western disturbance had arrived on 08th April 2025 over the Jammu & Kashmir region. An induced cyclonic circulation in the plains followed within 24 hours. Both these systems have complemented each other. Fairly widespread moderate rain and thundershowers lashed most parts of hilly states for the last two days. Hailstorms and cloudbursts impacted a few areas, disrupting communication and connectivity.

The state of Uttarakhand is more fragile amongst the hilly states and, therefore, more susceptible to disruptions under inclement weather conditions. Heavy rainfall triggered flash floods and landslides in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli, blocking highways and burying vehicles.   A cloudburst near Nandprayag worsened the crisis. Badrinath National Highway was among the key routes shut due to falling debris. Rescue efforts are underway, and BRO teams are working round the clock to clear roads and restore connectivity.

Western disturbance will continue to influence the weather conditions over entire hills in general and Uttarakhand in particular for the next 48 hours. The Garhwal region will be more susceptible than Kumaon to the high-impact weather activity. The Garhwal division will precisely include the districts of Chamoli, Pauri Garhwal, Tehri Garhwal, Rudraprayag and Uttarkashi. The weather conditions will be intense and spread out during the evening and night, today and tomorrow. More incidences of cloudbursts, lightning strikes, and hailstorms remain quite probable during this period. Actually, caution needs to be exercised beyond these two days, as the water bodies and the brittle slopes keep responding even after the improvement of weather conditions.

A broad clearance is expected over the region on 13th April and will improve further over the subsequent three days, till 16th April.  A fresh weather system is likely to approach again on 17th April 2025. Weather conditions will start clamping down again from 18 thApr onwards. Adverse weather conditions with fierce intensity are expected on 20th and 21st Apr 2025. Exercise caution to keep the rescue teams in a state of readiness and activate under short notice.
