Chennai has been quite unfortunate in terms of rains. In fact, the state capital has remained parched since February and the last rainy spells that the city has witnessed were on January 29.  Moreover, the month of April also failed to loop in any rainy activities over the city.

Heatwave like conditions also showed up in the state when the mercury level mounted a few notches and settled beyond 41°C. On April 16 and April 17, the maximums settled at 41.3°C and 42.2°C respectively. And for a coastal region like Chennai, temperature like this is considered to be heatwave like condition.

Although a few districts of Tamil Nadu did observe light rains in the recent past but the so-called leading commercial center of South India, Chennai remained arid from last almost four months. The average monthly rainfall of Chennai stands at 14.4 mm and till date, the city has not even witnessed a single drop of rain.

As per Skymet Weather, a trough is extending from eastern parts of the country to south Tamil Nadu. Due to which interior districts of Tamil Nadu witnessed rains in the last 24 hours but coastal region like Chennai was yet spared from observing any showers.

In a span of 24 hours from 08:30 am on Tuesday, districts like Vellore recorded 5.8 mm of rains, Dharmapuri 17 mm and Salem witnessed 4 mm of rainy spells. In fact, the nearby Tirupathi district in Andhra Pradesh also observed light traces of rain.

However, Skymet predicts southeasterly winds to start blowing over the region around April 29 and 30. Hence, some pre-Monsoon showers in the form of thunderstorms or light rain may occur in Tamil Nadu and Chennai. The maximums may also witness a marginal drop by one or two degrees. But no significant rains are expected during that time. Hence, the month of April will end on a deficient note for Chennai.
