Rain, Thunderstorms, and Lightning Strikes Likely Over Bihar and West Bengal
Apr 27, 2025, 1:15 PM | Skymet Weather TeamThe states of Bihar and West Bengal are bracing for an active spell of pre-monsoon weather, with widespread rain, thunderstorms, and lightning strikes forecast over the next three to four days.
Bihar has already recorded an impressive 106% surplus in rainfall during the pre-monsoon season so far, between March 1 and April 26. In contrast, West Bengal has seen a marginal surplus of just 4%. However, Bihar’s abundance of rain has come at a significant cost. Thunderstorms and lightning strikes, common in this season, have led to casualties across the state.
Currently, a cyclonic circulation lies over Bihar and adjoining Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, while another circulation is positioned over Central Assam. The combined effect of these two systems is expected to trigger widespread showers, thunderstorms, and strong winds across both Bihar and West Bengal.
While the upcoming rain will be beneficial for replenishing soil moisture and supporting agricultural activities, the associated lightning strikes pose a serious risk to life and property. Residents are advised to exercise caution, particularly during thunderstorms.
By the end of this rainy spell, both Bihar and West Bengal are likely to see a further increase in their rainfall surpluses.
Additionally, temperatures are expected to drop, bringing about more comfortable weather conditions that may last for at least a week.
In Bihar, eastern districts such as Kishanganj, Araria, Supaul, Madhubani, Darbhanga, Samastipur, Begusarai, Saharsa, Madhepura, Purnia, Katihar, Bhagalpur, Munger, Banka, Jamui, Nalanda, and Vaishali are set to receive intense rainfall.
Meanwhile, light to moderate rain and thunderstorms are expected in areas like Champaran, Gopalganj, Siwan, Muzaffarpur, Patna, Gaya, Bhojpur, Aurangabad, and Jehanabad.
In West Bengal, regions including Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Jalpaiguri, Cooch Behar, Alipurduar, Dinajpur, Malda, Murshidabad, Birbhum, Bardhaman, Mathura, Purulia, and Kolkata along with Diamond Harbour are likely to witness significant rain and thunderstorm activity.
Residents across both states are urged to stay updated with weather alerts and take necessary precautions during this volatile weather period.
