In the wake of Cyclone Vayu, southwesterly winds have been blowing in the South Konkan region of Maharashtra for the last many days and they have been responsible for giving rains in the coastal stations of the state.

In the last 24 hours from 8:30 am on Monday, light to moderate rains have been recorded in the coastal parts of Maharashtra, wherein Mahabaleshwar has recorded 16 mm of rainfall, followed by Dahanu 13 mm, Harnai 12 mm and Colaba (Mumbai) 7 mm.

According to meteorologists at Skymet, Cyclone Vayu has now weakened and rains are expected to decrease over South Konkan and Goa. Only light rains are expected to continue until June 23, in the coastal areas including Mumbai. Thereafter, rains will pick up a good pace.

Places like Mahabaleshwar, Dahanu, Harnai and Colaba (Mumbai) will observe light rains during next few days.

Moreover, no significant rain activity is expected in the interior parts of Maharashtra for the next two to three days.

Around June 21, a Low Pressure Area is expected to form in the West Central Bay of Bengal. Due to this system, humid winds from the Bay of Bengal would reach Vidarbha and Marathwada. A Trough is  also expected to form in the upper levels from North Madhya Pradesh up to North Konkan and Goa. Moreover, warm and humid south-westerlies will merge with north-easterlies over the region, thus leading to the formation of a Confluence Zone.

In the wake of these systems, Vidarbha and adjoining parts of Marathwada will start receiving good rains, June 21 onwards. In fact, moderate to heavy rains may lash several areas of Vidarbha and Marathwada between June 21 and 25.

The increased weather activities would also mark the arrival of Southwest Monsoon in Maharashtra.
