Rainy Weekend For Delhi, Most Activity In The Night

February 29, 2024 12:57 PM |

Another spell of winter rains is on a close call for the national capital. As predicted, rain and thundershowers will lash Delhi/NCR on 01st & 02nd March. Most of the weather activity will be during late hours, on both days. Quick clearance can be expected on Sunday, with welcome sunshine to make the whiff of winter pleasant, during the day. A slight nip in the air will follow, the next morning on 04th Mar, and stray clouds may come up in the night. Twist in the weather conditions and the fluctuations will remain, in the aftermath of a major wet spell over north India, including Delhi.

Western disturbance has arrived over the Western Himalayas. However, the weather activity will remain confined to the hills, today. Subsequent 48 hours, a broad area of northern plains will come under the influence of an active winter system. Delhi is on the farther end of reach of this system and therefore, will be shielded from the intense and powerful punch, which the weather system will otherwise deliver across the mountains and foothills. Delhi will have the wet spell commencing late at night on 01st Mar. Better conditions can be expected, during the morning and afternoon hours, the next day.  Winter showers will clamp down again in the evening on 02ndMar and last till 03rd morning.

A stroke of lightning and a peal of thunder is quite likely during this period. Gusty winds may accompany the thunderstorm in the night. The Spread and duration of weather activity will be more on 02nd March and relatively less, on the previous day. Stray clouds, intermittent rain and a possible brief peep of sunshine will lead to fluctuating mercury levels. Between, 29thFeb and 03rdMar, the day temperature may rise to 28°C (01Mar) and the minimum could reach 14°C (02Mar). In the wake of the system, the minimum may plunge, once again, to single digit, on 04thMar. Single-digit minimum temperatures are not at all common in the month of March. There is no such recording at the base observatory Safdarjung, during the last 4 years. Yes, in Mar 2019, a minimum temperature of 6.8°C and 9.0°C was recorded on 01st March and 07th March, respectively.

Winters are not likely to exit completely, from the capital city Delhi, even after this episode. There could be a long break during the next week. However, the persistent activity across the mountains will suppress the temperatures and keep the winter feel, lasting for an extended duration, till mid-March or even beyond.
