Cherrapunji record breaking rainGood showers have been lashing Cherrapunji for the past few days. While some areas have been recording light to moderate rain, heavy showers have also been observed in the region during this period.

In span of last 24 hours, Cherrapunji, received 70 mm of rain. In a span of 24 hours, Cherrapunji, one of the wettest places on the Earth recorded a whopping 205 mm of rainfall from April 13 to April 14. This rainfall figure is the highest since April 24, 2012, when the city had received 248 mm of rain.

However, in the past few years during the month of April, the rainfall figures have not even crossed the 200 mm mark.

The all-time rainfall record in Cherrapunji during the month of April stands at 644 mm, which was observed on April 16, 1990.

These rains can be attributed to the cyclonic circulation, which is presently over East Assam and Meghalaya. Also, a trough is extending from North Bangladesh to North Bay of Bengal. Thus, the combination of these two systems resulted in heavy showers over the Northeastern city.

These weather systems in Northeast India are likely to persist. Thus, more rains are in the offing for several areas in Northeast India.

In the past few years, rains in Northeast India have mostly been below the average levels. Thus, Cherrapunji also does not receive as much rain as in the previous years. However, the city does receive hefty rains on several occasions.
