Winters are almost at the doorsteps for the northern plains of India, which have been witnessing drop in minimum temperatures since past 2-3 days.
However, we expect that the minimums will once again rise by 2 to 3 degrees Celsius over most parts of Punjab, Haryana, Delhi-NCR, North Rajasthan and West Uttar Pradesh.
The surge in minimum temperatures can be credited to the change in wind direction, from northerly-northwesterly to southeasterlies.
This change in wind direction is due to an approaching fresh Western Disturbance over Jammu & Kashmir and adjoining areas. This system has previously induced a cyclonic circulation over Central Pakistan and adjoining areas of India.
As of now, we expect this cyclonic circulation to persist for another 2 to 3 days, then it will shift gradually towards east. As a result, dry and cold northerly winds will continue to get obstructed leading to increase in minimum temperatures.
However, after the passage of Western Disturbance, dry and cold winds will once again pick up and with this minimum temperature will begin to drop over entire northern plains from November 26 or 27.
Around this time, drop in minimum temperatures will be much steeper. In fact, most places may experience lows in single digits. Winds will be much cooler as they will be blowing from the hilly region of Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh wherein fresh snowfall of this season may occur.
