School Kids facing wrath of winter storm Leon

January 30, 2014 7:04 PM |

Winter storm Leon has moved further towards southeast US since Wednesday, bringing inclement weather and snowfall to a region that rarely experiences such conditions. Due to poor preparations, school going kids were one of the worst  affected as they had to spend nights in classrooms of school buildings.

According to a report published in CNN, Alabama Governor, Robert Bentley has said that the kids facing problems due to being in the classrooms will be taken care of. "We still have a number of students around the state that could potentially have to remain in school tonight, but they will be taken care of. They will be protected. They will be fed. They will stay warm." said Bentley.

The report further said that similar problems were faced by the school kids in Atlanta in Georgia. Thousands of school children who had been trapped on buses and in Atlanta-area schools overnight were reunited by early Wednesday evening with their families.

Georgia Governor Nathan Deal claimed through twitter post that they have been able to send back students to home. "Last night (Wednesday), we had at least 95 immobile buses. We had cleared them all by this morning, and that was a big task," he said. "Our next task was getting students home from school, and now we have achieved that."

According to the report, the winter storm has claimed 10 lives since Tuesday. In Alabama, five people died, and 23 people were injured, the state Emergency Management Agency said Wednesday. Thousands of accidents have been reported in Georgia. The Georgia State Patrol has put the accident number at 1,254 in which around 130 people have been injured.

According to our forecast, winter storm Leon will continue to keep temperatures below normal for next 24 hours in southeast US, forcing schools to remain closed.
