The ongoing winter season has remained fairly dry so far. An India seasonal rainfall deficiency has climbed to 71%. This is the highest shortfall, at least, in the last decade or so. There is a twist in the weather conditions likely for the northern part during this week. Simultaneous snowfall over the mountains and rainfall in the plains is likely during mid-week. Another spell can be expected around the fag end of the month.

A western disturbance is marked over North Pakistan and the adjoining Afghanistan region. The induced cyclonic circulation is marked over West Rajasthan and neighbouring parts. Both these systems will move across the Western Himalayas and plains of North India over the next two days. While the mountains will have a fresh bout of snow, the plains will break the jinx of a prolonged dry spell.

On the first day, significant weather activity will remain confined to Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh. The state of Himachal Pradesh will have a partial cover, confining to mid and high reaches. Over Uttarakhand, the least weather activity is expected, limited to the far-flung northern areas. On 20th Feb, Jammu & Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh will have a major share, and Uttarakhand will witness moderate weather activity. The snowfall over the Jammu division and Kashmir Valley will facilitate the postponed winter games on the revised dates, as and when announced.

On similar lines, parts of North Rajasthan, border areas of Punjab with Pakistan, and South Haryana will witness light to moderate rainfall on 19th Feb. The rains are likely to vacate Rajasthan the next day. However, northern parts of Punjab, most parts of Haryana, Delhi, and a few pockets of West Uttar Pradesh will observe moderate rain and thundershowers on 20th Feb. The remnant effect of these systems may remain in the hills and foothills on 21st Feb. Broadly, the weather activity will exit from these parts for the rest of the week. Another active spell may lash the hills and plains again around mid-week next.
